3 Times Geeks Won This Weekend!

This weekend was epic for anyone who considers themselves a fan of any and all things geek. Let me remind you the being geek is not something to fear, it’s a brand/icon/persona that you should fully embrace – and I have three reasons as to why geeks everywhere are jumping and squealing with epic joy!

1 | The Release of the X-Men Apocalypse Trailer
Yes, yes, YES! I don’t even have the words to describe how exciting this continuation of the X-Men story truly is. The trailer basically shows the struggle our favorite (and hated) mutants must go through in order to preserve a shred of the dignity they have for their kind. Oh this trailer is everything with our first glimpses of the younger versions of Jean Grey and Cyclops, newcomer Jubilee (check out Stephanie‘s OOTD inspiration), and we are finally graced with Professor X finally embracing the baldness.

Only the strong will survive. #XMen #Apocalypse

2 | The Release of the Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer
Show of hands, who watches Independence Day any time it comes on TV? I know I can’t help but watch it and have probably seen it 2,847 times. After that rousing speech from Bill Pullman as President Whitmore, I never dreamed that 20 years later we would be gearing up for a sequel! Not just any kind of sequel, but one that proves to want to live up to the hype we still all get while watching the original. It’s ok to be a little apprehensive about Will Smith not being in it, but I’ll definitely take Liam Hemsworth as a very nice consolation prize. At the end of the day, let’s remember that the star that matters is Jeff Goldblum (Valery agrees with me on this one).

SWEET BABY JESUS WE ARE IN SINGLE DIGITS! SINGLE FREAKING DIGITS! David and I crammed 5 movies into this weekend (we’ll discuss more of that later) and are planning on watching the 6th some time this week. It’s been amazing reliving the story that we’ve come to know and love so dearly. The characters that we’ve rooted for and a few that we’ve despised all making their way back into our hearts before this next chapter.

All I can think about as the days slowly go by is that I really should’ve bought a lightsaber at Dallas Comic Con Fan Days….

I too, am excited for all three. However, I have a lot (A LOT A LOT) of reservations and skepticism in regards to ID4:2. Jeff, Bill, Vivica, Judd (Julius Levinson) are all back, which is amazing as they were all integral parts of the original, but, no Will?! Really?! ID4 was the first time that he saved the world. I feel like it also helped to boost his movie career as it led to his near-yearly world-saving adventures for quite sometime. I rely on Will to save the world for me. Also, it’s been twenty years (that’s TWO WHOLE DECADES) since the first one.
The part of me that is jumping for joy and practically peeing myself in excitement is being held back by the cynical part of me that says, not only is it a sequel, which history tells us doesn’t always work out for films that were not originally intended to be multi-movie franchises, but it has been SO LONG since the first one that I’m afraid it won’t be as good. I watch ID4 every Fourth of July, I watch it when it’s not the Fourth of July. I’ve probably seen it a million times and I could recite the entire movie to you. I’ve seen the YouTube video of the guy who parodied Bill Pullman’s speech as his best man speech, and have seriously contemplated doing something similar for my sister when she eventually gets married.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’ll see it. And I’ll probably even love it. But, right now, at this moment, despite the goosebumps that the trailer gave me, I’m hesitant to get too excited about it.
And that’s my two cents. 🙂
