5 Truths for the Millennial Woman from Beyonce’s Lemonade

Let’s talk about Lemonade.

No, not the refreshing sweet drink that cools you down in the scorching heat of a blistering summer. I want to discuss the visual masterpiece that Beyonce released this last weekend that is spurring racial and political think pieces from anybody that feels their opinion should be heard.

This isn’t a think piece. We aren’t going to get into race or politics. We definitely aren’t going to get into whether or not you like Beyoncé because that could cause many fights to happen.

What we are going to do is raise our glasses to the gems that Beyonce has provided to women in any stage of their lives. This long sweet glass of Lemonade gave us the nectar of life to set our minds to anything that’s possible, be the best version of ourselves, and never settle for less.

As I’ve been listening, it took me back to vulnerabilities faced as a millennial and I started to piece together why this album was speaking to me. In all honesty, I should’ve seen this coming when Formation dropped and that infamous line of “I dream it, I work hard, I grind ’til I own it.” The truth bombs that any millennial woman can relate to are peppered throughout nearly every song.

I’ve neatly curated 5 lyrical gems that Lemonade gifted us, to challenge ourselves to break all any and all barriers!

“Best foot first just in case.” – Forward

No matter what you do in life, who tells you that you can’t do something, you always put your best foot first. You never know who is watching you and what can come from that one person noticing you. Always be a step ahead of the game with your best foot forward and your are guaranteed to make a splash in massive ways.

“I had my ups and downs, but I always find the inner strength to cool myself off / I was served lemons, but I made lemonade.” -Freedom

It’s the age old saying when life hands you lemons, you make lemonade. Life isn’t a perfectly wrapped present and you are going to run into hiccups. There will be times when you have to dig deep to pull yourself out of tough situations, but hang tight because the first sip of your sweet lemonade will be worth it. Our inner strength will help us throughout any trivial issues we face and the long cool drink will push us forward through all the goals we are trying to achieve.

“Every promise don’t work out that way.” -Sandcastles

As millennials, we already feel this way in a number of different ways both personally and professionally. Not every promise will work out in the way we want it to and that’s ok. This is when we dig deep and preserve over broken promises. We adapt, overcome, and grow. Grow to learn from the mistakes of those failed promises and make amends that it won’t happen again.

“I break chains all by myself / Won’t let my freedom rot in hell / Hey! I’ma keep running / Cause a winner don’t quit on themselves.” -Freedom

Every female between the ages of 24 to 37 should have these lyrics as their alarm, ringtone, or printed out in a spot they can see every day. As women, we already face a number of setbacks in both personal and professional manners. We see and hear about it every day – but by working together we can break the chains and destroy the cycle. Nobody stops you from being the boss. You are free to speak your mind, make your mark, and NEVER EVER QUIT ON YOURSELF. Women = Winners!

“Six inch heels, she walked in the club like nobody’s business.” -6 Inch

I saved this for last because 1) you’ll never catch me in 6 inch heels and 2) you better believe that standing at 5’10” I wear 4 inch heels like a champ! Christian Louboutin said it best, “high heels empower women in a way.” When I heard this lyric, I wasn’t quite sure how to interpret. It took a few times of listening to 6 Inch is basically the new anthem for being a straight up boss. Not a #girlboss. This is different. We are our own providers and we deserve the recognition for it. Take a walk in our heels and pull your weight!

Did I miss any lyrics that may have stood out to you? I mean….I’ve listened to the album non-stop since it’s release. I’ve watched the visual album 4 times now (my day job is getting in the way of my viewing pleasure).
