Star Wars for a New Generation

This weekend, I had the pleasure of seeing Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

I’ve been very transparent that this was a fandom that I haven’t always been on board with. It took a kind and patient man to slowly introduce me to and after watching this reboot, I’m forever grateful for the introduction.

I couldn’t trust myself to write a thorough review without sharing all the amazing nuggets within this film. Without giving away any spoilers, here are 3 takeaways I can share with you in regards to the newest chapter of the Star Wars saga.

1 | Invigorating reboot to a beloved franchise | After originally watching the six films back in 2005 and rewatching them this past two weeks, I can wholeheartedly say that this was everything a Star Wars fan needed. It makes up those lackluster prequels that we were subjected to, but I would still advise that you watch them – as painful as they are.

Fan favorites return, new characters are eagerly ready to be embraced,  and the story that we’ve all come to know and love is rejuvenated with a refreshing new life.

2 | Diversely beautiful casting | Valery and I briefly discussed this after our Thursday night viewings. Out of all the Star Wars films, this was the racially diverse of them – which is appropriate for 2015. The best part was these weren’t just roles that were floating around in the background as stage props. A young black man took the helm as one of the new characters that we root for. Seeing the different races represented in so many different forefronted roles was inspiring.

3 | Independent and driven woman takes charge | Princess General Leia will always have a sincere place in my heart, I mean Carrie Fisher is everything. With that being said, J.J. Abrams delivered a female character that we have needed in a movie for a while with the lead character Rey, played by Daisy Ridley. Rey is dynamic, motivating, and astoundingly perfect for the new and old Star Wars fan. Without giving to much away, you instantly want to root for her and not because she is a beautiful woman. You want to root for her because she is what we all are seeking in any Star Wars movie, a beacon of hope and determination for whatever crosses her path.

There you have it. If you haven’t seen it, stop doing yourself a disservice and make plans to see it. It’s broken records over the weekend, because it rightfully deserves all the praise it’s receiving.

May the force be with you!
