Standing in the Sun, Preparing to Raise a Strong Girl

Yesterday, I sat on my porch and felt the forceful strong kicks of my sweet little girl as the sun washed over my face. David tinkered in the background as he worked on putting our new mailbox up. Our dogs explored each new scent and wandered the yard. I sat on my porch and came to the realization that in less than 13 weeks I’ll be a mother. A mother to a baby girl that will come into this world with quite the fight on her hands.

Being strong is a struggle

There are days when I tire myself thinking about the struggle to remain strong. This immense need washes over me each day. The fight to voice my concerns falls on deaf ears. The tears are never seen in public if they even come at all. Being strong is a constant struggle for women today. We are either for or against each other. There is a divide that stands between women. Those of us who are willing to fight stand against persecution of those who remain in the shadows. Being strong isn’t easy, but it is necessary.

Equipping a strong girl

As the sunshine washed over me, I took the time to reflect on what I want to achieve in raising a strong girl. She will be raised fearless and consumed with passion. I want her to understand her worth in a world that will constantly demean her. My little girl will be raised to fight with courage for what she believes is right. I want to instill that she is cherished and belongs in a world that may not always seem to want her.

To be strong is to persist

My dear friend Valery of Valery Brennan and Everyday Unicorns created this amazing shirt that encompasses a battle cry to stand for. Nevertheless, she persisted. For her, I’ll persist. My tongue will be sharp and feverish to fight for her rights. Each day I will continue to give my absolute best to better my own destiny to be a role model that she looks up to. I will stand taller than ever to protect her from the struggles she will face. My guidance will encourage her to understand the women who have come before her. To respect the women who have given so much and those who continue to give. Stand strong this International Women’s Day!
